If you are interested in the history of the west and American Indians, this is a great read. I enjoyed reading this author's account which achieved a good balance between the issues represented by the settlers, the US army, and the Apache Indians. There were episodes of treachery, violence and intermittent acts of mercy by both sides.
The Apaches clearly did not realize what they were up against in fighting the US government and what appeared to be an endless flow of settlers and soldiers into their ancestral territory. It all has to be taken in perspective in that the Apaches also dispossessed peoples who were there before them.

This was a sad period for the many Mexican, and white American normal people; the settlers and immigrants who were just trying to create a better life for themselves who were caught in the middle and lost their lives.
On the other side, it was just as bad or worse for the Chiricahua Apache themselves who lost their civilization and culture, all their traditional lands, and were very nearly exterminated.
Perhaps one day we humans will live to learn from our mistakes of the past instead of continually duplicating them in the present. Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase. This book is a thorough presentation of the widely-studied Apache Tribe in the Southwest Indian Wars. The writing is clear and interesting, and the text is well organized. While the quality of the illustrations is mediocre, most such books have none, and once they moved like the wind pdf download added greatly to my appreciation of the author's points.
More historical background and context would be useful, and I would like to see a discussion of the 6th U. Cavalry and Major Albert Sieber's historic use of Indian scouts, but that would expand the author's intent to give a short, focused account. In my opinion, collections featuring American Indians in general and the Apache in particular would be incomplete without David Roberts' excellent work.
Southwest New Mexico is rich with Apache history. Although I do not know what my American Indian ancestry is, I am proud of it. This book is a masterpiece in research and insight! It is a no holds barred look into the workings of both the Apache, the "Blue Coats" and the circumstances they found themselves in.
If your a history buff, or a lover of the Apache way, then this book is a must. Sometimes it is graphic, but the author takes pains to help you understand why certain incidents and behaviors occurred. He also explains differences within the tribal bands, their chiefs and what made them tick.
Insight is given into the alliances within these factions or bands. And that these alliances were formed to overcome the obstacles and hardships the Apache faced.
Confusion, racism, and fear among the white eyes, coupled with indecision from the great white fathers in Washington exacerbated the situation. A point that stuck with me is a lack of compassion or understanding of why the different bands wanted to live in certain areas, or couldn't accept living on a reservation that wasn't in a geographical location they were used to. The government in all its supposed wisdom was blind to certain things that could have made a peaceful co-existence with the white citizens much easier, and faster.
I would have liked to have seen more information about Lozen the woman Apache warrior who was known to have special powers as did Geronimo. However there is some information on her. The author also points out discrepancies in stories and why some may not be as reliable due to bias and other reasons.
This is a book that is rather intricate with lots of pages, once they moved like the wind pdf download. I read a little each night and savored every moment.
It is a book that you will go back to, or read again because of the fact there is so much information. I've always had a curiosity about the Native Americans, but the books I tried reading always seemed overwhelming with information. This book details a fascinating and commonly forgotten piece of American history in a way where you are able to keep everything straights.
Its thirlling to learn about the once they moved like the wind pdf download of this lost culture, how these warriors lived, loved, and died, yet at the same time it leaves you feeling empty knowing what a tragic and common end they all faced.
As usual, David Roberts provides a well-documented, equally well-written account of the last free Apaches and the entire US Army's war to subdue these proud, free people.

The methods utilized by both the US Military and the Apache tribes, in their quests for land, appear to be well-researched and described. A very sad tale for both sides of the issue. Conflicts over land are as old as the human race and are never pleasant stories. This is a well-written account of that never-ending human conflict - taking into account that all people involved were humans with the same needs and fears, and their lack of ability to appreciate that in each other. Purchased for my son for his birthday - I asked him for a list of things he would like for birthday's and Christmas which makes life easier and also still can be something of a surprise - and he was delighted. My son is notoriously difficult to buy presents for as he generally buys whatever he wants as a rule, which poses a real problem at times, but at least "the list" gives us all some chance! My son has told me how appalling the American's treatment of the Native Americans of the United States truly was.
This subject has always been of great interest to him as history is probably his reading material of choice, and he has always retained a minor fascination with the North American Indian tribes in particular. Anyway, my son has reported back he thoroughly enjoyed a well written, acceptably objective, very informative once they moved like the wind pdf download fascinating overall read.
